Okay, so everyone and their abuelita talks about going to San Miguel de Allende. It’s gorgeous, I get it! But what if I told you there’s a secret, sparkling mountain town just a few hours from Mexico City that feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale? Welcome to Taxco, my new favorite place in the whole world! It’s not just cute; it’s a dizzying maze of cobblestone streets, draped over a mountain and glittering with… wait for it… SILVER! 😍
My heart did a little happy dance the moment our van rounded the final bend. Imagine this: hundreds of white houses with red-tiled roofs, all piled on top of each other like a messy, beautiful wedding cake. And at the very top, the most magnificent pink stone church you’ve ever seen! I knew right then this trip was going to be pure magic.

The Crown Jewel: Santa Prisca Church ⛪
You can’t miss it. The Santa Prisca Church is the star of the show, standing tall in the main square, Plaza Borda. It was built in the 1750s by a super-rich silver miner named José de la Borda (who basically said, “I struck it rich, so here’s a thank-you gift to God!”). Guys, the details! The outside is a beautiful baroque pink, and inside… oh my goodness. It’s covered in the most incredible, over-the-top gold leaf. The altarpieces are so detailed, I could have stared at them for hours. It feels majestic and cozy at the same time. I lit a little candle, made a wish, and felt totally at peace.
Plaza Borda & My Silver Shopping Spree! 💍
The square in front of the church, Plaza Borda, is the heartbeat of Taxco. It’s not huge, but it’s perfect. I found a cute café with a balcony, ordered a chocolate caliente (Mexican hot chocolate – so frothy and yummy!), and just watched the world go by. Old men chatting on benches, families laughing, and the church bells ringing… it was the best kind of background music.
But the REAL fun began when I hit the streets! Taxco is the silver capital of Mexico. Every other shop is a platería (silver shop), and they are full of treasures. I’m talking delicate rings, chunky bracelets, elegant necklaces, and funky earrings – all handmade by local artisans! I felt like a pirate finding treasure. The best part? You can bargain! I practiced my Spanish, smiled a lot, and walked away with the most beautiful sterling silver ring with a tiny opal for a fraction of the first price. My souvenir game was STRONG. 💪

Getting Lost (On Purpose!) in the Cobblestone Labyrinth 🗺️
The best way to explore Taxco is to put your map away. I spent a whole afternoon just wandering the steep, winding alleys. I passed beautiful old colonial buildings with giant wooden doors and bright bougainvillea flowers spilling over balconies. I found the Casa Borda, the miner’s old house that’s now a cultural center, and peeked into its courtyard.
A super fun (and slightly sweaty) adventure is taking a taxisco! These are tiny, white Volkswagen Beetle taxis that zip up and down the insane hills like they’re on a rollercoaster. It’s the official way to get around, and it’s a total blast! 🚗💨
My Cute & Cozy Taxco Tips:
- Stay: I found the cutest boutique hotel with a terrace view of the church. Waking up to that sight with my coffee was a 10/10 experience.
- Eat: You HAVE to try pozole (a hearty hominy stew) at a local fonda! Also, the cecina (salted, dried meat) is a regional specialty. For a sweet treat, get a cocada (coconut candy) from a market vendor.
- Go Early: The main square is dreamy in the morning light before the day-trip crowds arrive.
- Pack Good Shoes: Seriously, your cute sandals will hate you. Bring comfy sneakers for all those hills!
Leaving Taxco felt like saying goodbye to a friend. It’s not a polished, perfect tourist spot; it’s a real, vibrant, working town with a huge heart and a sparkling soul. If you want a place that’s all about charm, history, handmade beauty, and the best kind of getting lost, you’ll fall in love with Taxco just like I did. It’s a tiny treasure box of a town, and I can’t wait to go back! ✨
